What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Generalized anxiety disorder or GAD is a disorder of the mood in which a person’s life is affected due to insignificant worries. The most common form anxiety disorders are specific phobias.

Other anxiety disorders include separation anxiety disorder in children, social anxiety disorder, selective mutism, panic disorder, and agoraphobia.
GAD is very common and can be found in millions of people across the globe.

There are several factors which lead to GAD. Mostly women suffer from the condition more than men. Also, people who have a family history of anxiety and depression are more at a risk of suffering from the disorder. Young adults are at a higher risk of GAD than older adults.

What are the Signs and Symptoms?

The most common symptoms seen in a GAD patient include:

  • Restlessness
  • Feeling tired
  • Concentration problems
  • Feeling blank
  • Irritability
  • Tension in the muscle
  • Problems with falling asleep

Prognosis for GAD

There are multiple treatments available for curing anxiety disorders. These treatments include anti-anxiety medication and several specific forms of psychotherapy. People who experience panic attacks, treatment can be possible by using natural remedies also. Behavioural techniques are equally important to decrease the anxiety level and relax the mind.
Also people suffering from anxiety disorders may also need to be treated for emotional problems. Depressed patients may think drugs and alcohol as their last resort to overcome the anxiety. Patient suffering from stress can also have suicidal thoughts which can only be treated by psychiatric consultation.
