What is the Prognosis of Cholecystitis?

What is Cholecystitis?

Cholecystitis is a condition in which inflammation occurs in the gallbladder. Gallbladder is an organ which is placed in the right side of the abdomen, right under the liver. The organ has a digestive fluid known as bile which is released into the small intestine.

In major cases of cholecystitis, the gallstone blocks the tube leading out of the gallbladder. This causes an accumulation of bile leading to inflammation. Besides this, the other causes of cholecystitis includes bile duct troubles and tumours.

What are the Causes of Cholecystitis?

When a person suffers from cholecystitis their gallbladder becomes inflamed due to various reasons which include:
Gallstones: in major cases of cholecystitis, gallstones block the cystic duct which is the tube through which the bile flows. This accumulates the fluid inside gallbladder leading to inflammation.
Tumour: When a tumour occurs, it prevents the bile to move out of the gallbladder completely. This also leads to cholecystitis.
Bile duct blockage: When there is a scar in the bile duct, it can create blockage which leads to cholecystitis.

Prognosis for Cholecystitis

In many cases, prognosis is possible within few days or a few weeks. It happens in rare conditions that a person can become critical from conditions like gallbladder perforation, cholangitis or pancreatitis. It can prove to be fatal in rare conditions.
