What are Mental Disorders

The term mental health indicates a person’s cognitive and/or emotional well-being. It indicates the way you think, feel and behave. In fact, good mental health also means an absence of mental disorders in the concerned person. In mental illness (or mental disorder), the brain gets affected in such a way that the way a person thinks, feels, behaves and/or relates to others or to his or her surroundings also get disturbed. Mental health influences a person's ability to enjoy life and the aptitude to reach a balance between lifestyle related activities and efforts to accomplish psychological resilience. According to experts, anyone can suffer from mental health problems regardless of age, sex, social status and ethnicity.


There are several kinds of mental illnesses the symptoms of which differ.  The severity of the symptoms of any mental illness can range from mild to severe. Some types of severe mental disorders can be very disabling and can therefore, prevent the patient from functioning normally; thereby affecting every sphere of his or her life. People with an untreated mental illness can find it difficult to cope with life's daily routines and demands. Appropriate treatment of mental disorders proves to be very beneficial for most people.
