Tips for living with asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung disease which may need long term treatment. The repeated episodes of acute attack and the need for long term treatment can make living with asthma a challenge. Read on to know tips on living with asthma that can help you to lead an active and healthy life.

  • Follow your doctor’s treatment recommendations (regarding quick relief medications, long term control medications and asthma control plan in case of acute episodes) and go for all the scheduled follow ups. If your symptoms are not well controlled with your current medication, consult your doctor at the earliest.
  • Learn about your asthma management plan, your medications and work with your healthcare provider and his or her support staff to control your asthma symptoms. Learn about the medications that need to be taken in case of an acute asthma attack.
  • Avoid trigger factors which lead to an acute asthma episode in you such as pet dander, dust mites, smoke, pollens and certain weather conditions. Follow preventive measures such as avoid going outdoors on days when pollen in the air is expected to be high, or when it is dusty; wear a protective mask when you go out to reduce exposure to allergens; take measures to control exposure to allergens at home, and quit smoking.
