Fever is one of the most common conditions that almost all of us suffer at one or the other point of time. When our body temperature exceeds the normal level which is 98–100degree Fahrenheit(36–37degree Centigrade), we feel sudden changes in our body. Feeling cold or shivery is a common sign of the arrival of fever. This is actually a phenomenon with which our body tries to fight against infection. This is a part of our immune system. Getting fever sometimes is good for health but getting fever frequently or for longer time periods is alarming.

There are certain factors that trigger fever or affect body temperature such as exercising, eating, sleeping. etc. As per doctors, mild fever is okay but if the temperature exceeds abnormally. In such conditions, medication is advised. Medicines that control fever are called antipyretics. Here are some things that fever bring:

  • Sweating
  • Shivering
  • Headaches
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Dehydration
  • Sleepiness
  • Irritability

Increased risk of fever

Here are some factors that decide the severity of fever:

Age: Children are at greater risk of contracting any disease and developing a fever. Children in preschool and elementary school can experience six to 12 colds per year often associated with fever and adolescents and adults usually have two to four colds per year which may or may not be associated with fever.

Contact: Being in close contact with a person who is sick increases your risk of catching the infection and fever. Doctors always suggest keeping a distance from people who have a fever so that you don’t catch it.

Never come in direct contact with the infected person as it increases your chances of getting down with fever. In some instances, the other person got severely ill after coming in contact with an infected person.

Immunity: People with weak immune systems (weakened by medications such as corticosteroids or diseases such as HIV/AIDS) are at increased risk of developing an infection and fever.

If you are prone to getting down with fever and body temperature shifts during seasonal changes, you probably have weak immunity. Such people need to be extra cautious about their health. Eating immunity-boosting foods such as dry fruits, nuts, seeds, etc. may help with strengthening your immune system.

Food and water: Having contaminated food or water increases the risk of infection and fever. Are you someone who easily catches fever when you visit a new place? That is probably because your body is not strong enough to adapt to the changes. You must carry your own food and water while on a trip to avoid such a condition as eating outside may trigger health complications in your body.
