Psoriasis Treatment in Ayurveda

Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes skin redness and irritation. Usually, people suffering from psoriasis tend to develop thick, red skin with flaky, silver-white patches. The condition is non-infectious and can occur in any person usually between the ages of 15 and 40.  The ancient Indian medicinal form of ayurveda, the ancient Indian branch of medicine in which all remedies and treatments are derived from naturally occurring substances, is one of the very effective ways of curing this condition. There are various ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis based on the severity of the skin condition.

Curing skin conditions such as psoriasis involve detoxifying the body to remove any toxins that may be causing such an effect. Panchakarma treatments are often recommended for this condition. According to the website of, an ayurvedic institution in Kerala, this process often consists of several processes like lepanam (application of ointments), abhayangam (oil massage), snehapanam (taking medicated ghee), pizhichil (full body massage), avisnanam (medicated steam bath), sirovasti (keeping oil on head) and other bastis (enema). A regular diet too is mandatory during this process.

Other diet plans include non consuming eatables containing curd, black gram, chillies and highly salted preparations. It is also advised, that patients suffering from psoriasis should avoid refrigerated or chilled foods. Herbal ayurvedic medicines for treatment of psoriasis are black nightshade, garlic, jasmine, guggul (or gugal), neem, and turmeric.

Apart from the ayurvedic remedies for psoriasis, meditation and yoga are also recommended. It is also advised that sufferers of psoriasis ensure that they do not bathe in cold water immediately after a heavy work out (like a long walk, travel, etc) and refrain from eating large amounts of acidic foods.

A word of caution, though, is necessary. It is always important to consult an ayurveda practitioner before medicating oneself. Each one of the ayurvedic remedies for psoriasis is tailored for an individual and must be altered according to every individual patient. So, it is strongly advised that you not indulge in self medication and use this information only as a tool.
