Every parent wants his/her baby to be smart and intelligent. How about making your baby smart right when it is in the womb? Studies have found that babies begin to learn even before they are born, acquiring skills in the womb.
The brain development of a baby is largely genetic, but manual stimulation can always improve its intelligence. Here is what you need to do to help your baby’s brain develop in your as well its favour.
Prenatal Stimulation: Thomas R. Verny, an expert on the effects of prenatal and early postnatal environment on personality development and faculty at the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute suggests that prenatal stimulation creates a positive influence on the baby's life when it grows up. Touching your womb or exposing your baby to its first language through singing, talking and reading can stimulate brain development.
Talk to offspring: A 23-week old baby in the womb can hear and recognise sounds. A research at the NYU Brain Research Laboratories suggests that playing music or reading poems to the baby while it is in the womb can influence brain development.
Engage in physical activities: It is necessary to exercise a little each day during pregnancy as sitting for long periods devoids the unborn baby of sensory stimuli. Take walks or go swimming to expose your baby to new sounds.
Eat right: Eating right not just contributes to healthy pregnancy, but also has a positive impact on the baby’s development. An ideal pregnancy diet to make the baby smart must include foods laden with omega-3 fats (vegetable-based) and its derivatives (DHA). Foods high in folic acid such as citrus fruits, broccoli, liver, green leafy vegetables and beans, avert the risk of brain and spinal cord defects.

Smart babies stay in the womb longer: A study published in the journal Pediatrics states that the longer a baby stays in the womb the smarter the child will be. The researchers found improved brain development and better academic test scores for full-term infants compared with others. Mothers should not panic when the babies comes out after or at 37 weeks, though they must make sure they complete the term and not opt for early deliveries.
Parents must observe the baby’s response to various situations, such as when the mother listens to music or when she reads to him/her. Activities to encourage brain development in the baby in womb should be practiced with a sense of responsibility and should not cause harm of any kind to your unborn baby.
