Diet for an asthma patient should be healthy and light. Food should be taken at regular intervals in controlled amounts to avoid overloading of the stomach. An overloaded stomach initiates an asthma attack.
A healthy asthmatic diet plan is essential to avoid the occurrence of an asthma attack and prevent the negative effects of asthma. Asthmatics should be very careful about what they eat as occurrence of an asthma attack greatly depends on specific food items.
An asthma patient should avoid eating starchy food such as rice, lentils and potatoes. These foods cause constriction of the bronchial arteries, thereby resulting in asthma attack. Asthmatic patients should avoid taking coffee and smoking. Coffee contains caffeine which causes thickening of the bronchial vessels, leading to sleeplessness and anxiety. Tobacco smoking leads to chronic bronchitis which goes on to cause asthma. Intake of cold drinks and fruit juices should be completely avoided by asthma patients. Asthma diet should not include milk and milk products as they increase the severity of lung inflammation. People who take more amount of salt and vegetable oils in their food are likely to have asthma attacks more frequently.
An asthma diet should contain large amount of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits are an excellent source of antioxidants which cause relaxation of the inflamed lung muscles and bronchial constriction. They also provide vitamin C, vitamin E and beta carotene that are essential to keep lungs healthy. Green vegetables decrease the amount of free radicals in the body which act as triggers for asthma.
Asthma patients are recommended to have a light dinner two hours prior to sleeping. Asthmatic patients lose a large amount of water due to fast and forced respiration. So they should consume large amount of water even between the meals. They should not have water during the meals because this can make the stomach heavy.
Diet for asthmatic patients should contain a proper amount of flavenoids, beta carotene, minerals such as selenium, magnesium, calcium and omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. These food items have a positive effect on the person’s health. A healthy diet is the best way to prevent the occurrence of asthma.
