Certain food items when included in the diet of asthma patients have positive effects. They greatly decrease the asthma symptoms. A diet containing high amounts of vitamins, especially vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E is well suited for asthma patients. Fruits are a rich source of vitamins, so incorporate large amount of colourful fruits in the diet.
Beta carotene is another ingredient which controls the asthma symptoms. It reduces the inflammation in the lungs. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, lettuce and starchy vegetables such as sweet potatoes and carrots contain high amount of beta carotene. An asthma diet should contain food rich in selenium, magnesium and sodium. These minerals cause relaxation of bronchial muscles, which treats asthma. They also help in the treatment of cough and other respiratory disorders which can further develop into asthma. Nuts, chicken, meat and oysters have high content of these minerals.
Fatty acids such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids help to reduce swelling of the lungs and also repair any kind of tissue damage caused due to asthma. Fish such as salmon, mackerel and all oily type fishes contain omega-3 fatty acids.
