World Oral Health Day 2025: Check Theme, History And It's Significance

Every year on March 20, the global community observes World Oral Health Day (WOHD), a pivotal initiative aimed at emphasising the significance of oral hygiene and its profound impact on overall health. Established by the FDI World Dental Federation in 2007, this day serves as a reminder that maintaining oral health is essential for a healthier, happier life.

History of World Oral Health Day

Initially celebrated on September 12 to honour FDI founder Dr Charles Godon, World Oral Health Day was later moved to March 20 in 2013 to encourage broader global participation. The choice of March 20 is symbolic:

  • Children should have 20 baby teeth.

  • Adults are expected to have 32 teeth and zero cavities.

  • Seniors should aim to retain at least 20 natural teeth at the end of their lives.

  • This numerical representation (3/20) underscores the day's mission to promote optimal oral health across all age groups.

Theme for 2025: "A Happy Mouth is A Happy Mind"

The theme for World Oral Health Day 2025, "A Happy Mouth is A Happy Mind," highlights the intrinsic connection between oral health and mental well-being. It emphasises that good oral health is essential for a healthier, happier life and closely linked to overall quality of life, including factors like self-esteem, confidence, and social well-being.

Significance of World Oral Health Day

Oral diseases, including dental caries, gum disease, and tooth loss, affected 42% of the WHO African Region’s population in 2021. The region also has the highest number of noma cases, a rapidly progressing, non-contagious gangrenous disease of the mouth that primarily affects young children. If left untreated, noma has a high fatality rate, and survivors often suffer from life-long impairments, disfigurement, stigma, and discrimination.
