When you visit a skincare professional, the first thing they’re likely to ask you is your skin type. This is important. You may wonder why, and if you’re not well-versed in the field, it may even take you aback. But why is it really crucial to know one’s skin type? How does it affect your skincare journey? And to what extent does it contribute to the effectiveness of the skincare products you use? To find answers to all these questions, the OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Raina N Nahar, Senior Consultant - Dermatology, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai.

Why Is It Crucial To Know Your Skin Type?
Understanding your skin type not only equips you to choose products that work best for your skin, but it also helps to assess the sensitivity of your skin and determine what you should avoid, according to Dr Nahar.
She says that different skin types age differently, and therefore, knowing your skin type helps you create an effective skincare routine, understand your allergies, and anticipate your ageing process. This can, in turn, help you incorporate a holistic approach to taking care of your skin.
How To Know Your Skin Type At Home?
The best way to know about your skin type is by getting it examined by a dermatologist. However, you can also determine it at home through simple tricks recommended by Dr Nahar.
She says, “After washing your face, wait a couple of hours and dab a tissue paper or blotting paper on your forehead, the tip of your nose, and the apples of your cheeks. If there is a significant oil blotch, you have oily skin. If there is a small amount of oil, you have normal skin. If it is dry, you have dry skin.”
“Another method is observing your skin after a day's work. If you notice a lot of oil secretion, shiny skin, and clogged pores, you likely have oily skin. Some people have combination skin, where the T-zone is oily and the cheeks are drier,” she adds.
According to the doctor, dry skin also tends to age quickly, with fine lines, open pores, and wrinkling. On the other hand, oily, thick skin is likely to sag more due to more volume, clogging pores, and sebaceous hyperplasia, leading to zits and blemishes.
Combination skin will have different issues, with the T-zone being oily and the cheeks dry, the doctor notes further.
Skincare Products As Per Skin Type
If you have fine, thin, dry skin, incorporating hyaluronic acid and ceramides as moisturisers will help repair the skin, build the skin barrier, slow down the ageing process, and improve skin immunity.
If you have oily skin, using salicylic or glycolic acid cleansers and serums will help you unclog pores and keep your skin healthy, reducing zits and blemishes.
