A study published in MDPI’s journal ‘Antioxidants,’ concluded, ‘Of the available snack foods, popcorn certainly has the potential to provide the most health benefits as part of a balanced diet.’ To explore these benefits further, the team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to Dr M Gayathri, Senior Clinical Dietician, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderguda.

“Popcorn is made from corn kernels and is the healthiest when they are air-popped,” said Dr Gayathri. Here are some reasons why you should not feel guilty before indulging in a satisfying bowl of popcorn.
Whole Grain Goodness
Popcorn is essentially a whole grain, which means it contains all parts of the grain without losing out on any nutritional value of corn. They are also an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, which provide sustained energy. Additionally, as stated by the MDPI study, ‘Popcorn is also the most satiating food among the snacks and desserts.’ Hence, popcorn can help you feel full and curb your overeating.

One of the major perks of popcorn is its low-calorie content. Dr Gayathari said, “It's a good choice of snack because it less calories less than 100 kilos calories.” In fact, the MDPI study stated that a cup of air-popped popcorn only has 30 calories, and can help with weight management.

Popcorn is a great source of dietary fibre, which is essential for digestive health. Suggesting some tasty and healthy ways to include popcorn in your diet, Dr Gayathri advised, “It's the healthiest when it is popped in an air frier or microwave. That helps to retain its nutrients and maintain its fibre content.”
The MDPI study revealed that making popcorn in the microwave does not mess up its nutrient or fibre content, further supporting its position as a great choice for a snack.
Antioxidant-Rich
Surprisingly, popcorn also contains antioxidants which are known for preventing cell damage and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. In fact, the MDPI study found that when compared to oats, wheat, and rice, corn and hence popcorn have a higher quantity of antioxidants.
How To Include Popcorn In Your Diet
Suggesting the best ways to consume popcorn, Dr Gayathari recommended, “While consuming popcorn, make sure you pick oil-free and low salt and sugar popcorn.”
“Keep in mind that portion control is important because too much popcorn will increase your calorie intake. However, you can add dark chocolate to your popcorn if you are craving a sweeter snack,” she added.
