There has been a concerning upstick among young adults as kidney stone cases are on the rise. Earlier, this condition was commonly seen in older people as compared to today, it is more common in Gen Zs and Millenials.
Studies have shown that kidney stone cases are more prevalent in the adults between the age of 20 and 40. Let’s understand why there is a rise in cases from a doctor and know how to curb it.

According to Dr Kumar, the widespread availability of fast-food options and simultaneously, a decline in water consumption is a leading cause of kidney stones among young adults. A trend of trying new foods amid the pressures of modern life is troublesome causing such kidney conditions in young age.
Factors Contributing To Kidney Stones Among Young Adults
Several factors including family history and unhealthy diet can lead to the formation of kidney stones. Dr Kumar explained some common factors giving rise to kidney stone.
1. Genetic Factors
Dr Kumar said, “Genetic predisposition or shared lifestyle and dietary habits within families can significantly increase the risk of kidney stone formation.”
2. Unprescribed Medication
The intentional use of over-the-counter medication, particularly vitamin C tablets, without proper medical supervision is another major cause of stone development, as per Dr Kumar. He said, “ This issue became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when individuals turned to self-administered Vitamin C regimens without consulting healthcare professionals.”
3. Unhealthy Diet
Foods with high amounts of sodium, mostly found processed and fast food, contribute to the formation of kidney stones. Such eating habits along with less water intake adds on the risk of getting kidney stones.
4. Urinary Tract Infections And Other Kidney Problems
People with a history of UTIs or prior kidney stones, whether in childhood or later, or those with underlying kidney issues, are at a higher risk for developing kidney stones.
Dos And Don’ts To Prevent Kidney Stone
Dr Kumar shared his insights on how to prevent this rising condition of the kidney.
1. Limit the use of sodium in your diet
2. Avoid taking over-the-counter medicines, seek doctor’s advice
3. Drink more water and fluids
4. Do not intentionally limit the amount of Calcium intake in the diet, take appropriate healthcare professional/dietitian advice

6. Avoid high oxalate foods
7. Be vigilant of signs and symptoms of kidney stones and seek evaluation
8. Regular follow up with a kidney specialist or nephrologist if signs occur
9. Maintain a healthy lifestyle
