Do you find your hair oily and dull during periods? Most of us can relate to this common struggle. Those days when your hair just won't cooperate, and you're left feeling frustrated with your locks. But why does this happen, and what can we do about it?
To answer this question, the Onlymyhealth team spoke to Dr Manisha Rastogi, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Sparsh Hospital, Jaipur.
Why Do Hair Get Greasy During Periods?
Explaining why some women notice oily and greasy hair during periods, Dr Rastogi said, “The main culprit behind oily scalp during periods is the secretion from the sebaceous glands. These glands, located on the surface of the scalp, produce sebum, a natural oil essential for healthy hair growth and texture. However, an excess of sebum leads to that undesirable greasy appearance, which is particularly prominent during puberty and menstruation.”
The hormones play a significant role in this process. According to the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, estrogen levels, which are higher prior to menstruation to stimulate the luteinizing hormone (LH), partially enhance sebaceous gland activity. But if pregnancy doesn't occur, estrogen levels drop, and testosterone becomes dominant, signaling the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. This hormonal shift is what contributes to oily hair during periods.
“While those with oily hair struggle to manage their locks during this time, those with dry hair enjoy the respite from dullness and frizz,” said Dr Rastogi.
Washing Hair During Periods? Myth Busted
One prevailing menstruation myth is that you shouldn't wash your hair during your period, which counteracts the need to get rid of oily, greasy hair. According to Dr Rastogi, this couldn't be further from the truth. Maintaining hygiene during menstruation is crucial, and washing your hair is part of that routine.

“A warm water bath and an oil-removing shampoo can work wonders in alleviating the symptoms of Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS), including oily hair. However, it's advisable to avoid using soap in the vaginal area, as it can disrupt the pH balance and lead to issues like urinary tract infections. Instead, opt for gentle cleaning with warm water,” suggested Dr Rastogi.
She added, “During menstruation, the scalp can become more sensitive, so it's best to avoid chemical treatments, blow-drying, or perming your hair during this time.”
How To Manage Oily Hair During Periods?
In addition to regular hair washing and hygiene practices, Dr Rastogi shared some tips for managing oily hair during periods:
- Healthy Diet: Avoiding junk and oily foods can help reduce excess oil secretion, benefiting both your hair and overall health.
- Self-Care: Pamper yourself in the week leading up to your period with a soothing shower using aroma oils or a deep conditioning treatment. This not only helps manage oily hair but also promotes relaxation and well-being.
By understanding the science behind oily hair during periods and debunking common myths, you can take proactive steps to manage this issue effectively.
