Feeling Hot During Pregnancy? Expert Explains The Reasons And What You Can Do About It

Many women commonly experience increased warmth or heat sensations more frequently during pregnancy. Experiencing a rise in body temperature is normal, however, being aware of the factors causing it can help you stay prepared and prevent overheating. We spoke to our expert Dr Vijay Meenakshi, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Varthur Road, Bangalore, who explained the reasons for feeling hot during pregnancy and if it is normal.

Physiological Changes and Temperature Regulation

Generally, pregnant women have a higher body temperature of about 1-2 degrees Fahrenheit above the normal temperature than non-pregnant women. “It is crucial to understand that the temperature rise is due to physiological changes occurring throughout gestation and does not indicate fever. The increase in body temperature is due to various pregnancy-induced factors”, highlighted Dr Meenakshi.

Some important physical alterations in the body system to accommodate the foetus lead to an alteration of the normal functioning of several systems, including fluid balance, respiration, blood circulation, cardiovascular functions, digestion, and metabolism.

“For instance, during pregnancy, there is a significant change in the blood volume, which increases from regular 5.5-7 litres. This rise helps ensure a proper growth rate and an adequate supply of oxygen and other nutrients for the baby”, added Dr Meenakshi.

According to the Cardiovascular Journal of Africa, by the eighth week of pregnancy, the heart rate increases by 20%, which in turn causes a slight boost in metabolism and body temperature.

Hormonal Ups and Downs

During pregnancy, there are significant hormone fluctuations, causing the body temperature to shoot up unprecedentedly. Hormones like progesterone, oestrogen, placental steroids, nitrous oxide, and prostaglandins interfere with vascular function. “This leads to vasodilation (dilation of blood vessels) to accommodate the increased blood volume and ensure the effective exchange of nutrients between mother and foetus. This vasodilation leads to a flushed skin appearance and a sensation of warmth”, said Dr Meenakshi.

Thermoregulation and Adaptation

Additionally, thermoregulatory processes in the body adjust according to pregnancy requirements. The temperature rise is also used as an adaptation mechanism to ensure enough blood supply for the uterine walls and the developing foetus.

Dr Meenakshi added, “The body re-directs blood flow to provide more oxygen during the delivery process through vasodilation thus, reducing potential bleeding risks and ensuring that vital physiological parameters like temperature, pulse rate, and blood pressure are maintained.”

Preventing Overheating During Pregnancy

Pregnant women must control their body temperatures well, particularly in hot climates or places with high temperatures. Sufficient hydration is necessary for offsetting fluid loss that may be caused by either vomiting or exposure to heat during summer days. Here are some tips listed by Dr Meenakshi that you should follow:

  • Pregnant ladies should consider wearing loose clothing made from breathable materials, such as cotton to maintain adequate air circulation around their bodies throughout their pregnancies
  • Pregnant mothers need to consume a balanced diet consisting of fruits and vegetables that help regulate body temperatures and provide essential nutrients needed by both mother and baby

Bottomline

Dr Meenakshi concluded, “It is not abnormal to experience feelings of warmth during pregnancy due to the typical physiological reaction to the complex changes within the body. Understanding these crucial occurrences enables women to adopt preventative measures to preserve their comfort and well-being throughout their pregnancy.”
