Testicular Cancer: Doctor Explains Why It Is Important To See Beyond Embarrassment

Although testicular cancer is very uncommon in India, it affects less than one man per 100,000 men. However, this cancer can have a significant impact on young males. Testicular cancer is often shrouded in embarrassment and stigma and because of the reluctant behaviour to acknowledge its symptoms can delay the diagnosis leading to further consequences.

To understand how to break the stigma that revolves around in the society, OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Gagan Gautam, Vice Chairman, Urology, Renal Care, Medanta, Gurugram.

Explaining, Dr Gautam said, “Knowing the reasons and risks, such as undescended testicles, family history, and genetic conditions, is important for spreading awareness and encouraging healthy habits.”

Adding further, he said, “Testicular cancer isn't just about physical health; it affects mental well-being too. The fear of the unknown, the financial strain of treatment, and the emotional toll on relationships are all part of the equation. Normalising the conversations around testicular cancer can empower individuals to break the silence and seek support.” Here are some ways suggested by the doctor to break the stigma around testicular cancer.

1. Getting To Know Your Body

The testicles or testes are the male reproductive glands located within the scrotum. These glands produce sperm and testosterone. “Regular self-examinations are key. Take the time to feel for any irregularities—lumps, bumps, or changes in size or texture. This simple act of self-awareness can make a significant difference, allowing for early detection and timely intervention if required,” Dr Gautam said. If you find any unusual lumps or swellings, or change in texture, consult your doctor.

2. Take Action

During self -examination, if you find a lump or any abnormality, it is important to consult with a doctor for proper diagnosis. Dr Gautam emphasised on being calm and refrain from self diagnosis. “During your visit, the urologist will conduct a thorough physical examination and may recommend additional tests, such as an ultrasound, to further evaluate any abnormalities,” Dr Gautam said.

Dr Gautam advised, “Don't hesitate to open up to your friends, family, and partner about testicular health and the significance of self-examination.”

4. Stay Informed

Staying informed can help you recognise the symptoms and potential warning signs properly. As per doctor, this will help you navigate the healthcare system confidently and you will be able to make informed decisions.
