What Is Womb Transplant? How Can It Help To Conceive And What Are The Risks

There are many health issues which we do not accept publicly due to fear of being judged and questioned. One such health issue which is common in both males and females is that of infertility. Infertility is less talked about as it concerns the so called ‘ethical behaviour’. Hence most of the people restrict themselves to openly talk about it or find a solution. Infertility in women is similarly a rising cause of concern which can be addressed by uterus transplant or is also called Womb Transplant.

What is Womb Transplant?

It is basically a procedure where one woman who has infertility due to unhealthy uterus gets another uterus transplanted inside her due to which the issue of infertility gets eradicated. Senior Gynaecologist Dr. Bindiya Khera from City Hospital, Lucknow shares some important points with OnlyMyHealth. She tells that approximately 15-20% of woman in India face the issue of infertility out of which 20% of them are caused due to unhealthy uterus. This problem can be now solved through help of IVF. However this procedure cannot be considered 100 percent safe, it has its own risks which can be both physical and mental traumas.

Women of some bodies do not accept the new uterus and hence cause complications. Most of the women who undergo uterus transplant have been successful but there are some cases where the result was not satisfactory or had some side effects. Hence Dr. Bindiya suggests having this transplant only after knowing the risk factors and if necessary.

Why Should You Have Uterus Transplant?

The main reason for having uterus transplant is that women who are affected by some type of uterus problem and cannot conceive are able to have to have babies. The condition which can be responsible for infertility can be-

  • Absent uterus
  • Congenital conditions
  • Duplication of uterine structure
  • Lack of fully formed structures
  • Single uterus divided into two parts.
  • Two uteri sharing a single cervix.

Those who are suffering from these problems can get uterus transplant and conceive. It also maintains their sexual health. Apart from this one can also suffer from AUFI that is acquired conditions that result in chronic reproductive diagnosis including endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This may cause uterine adhesions, ovarian, uterine cysts or uterine fibroids. These issues can be resolved through womb transplant.

Risk Factors of Having Womb Transplant

Since it is such a complicated surgery, it does involve many risks. Potential risk factors of having womb transplant are loss of blood during transfusion, chances of having infection, organ rejection or poor reaction to medications or anaesthesia. It can also cause potential traumatic experience or emotional drainage.

Physical Risks-

  • Any type of organ transplant requires patient to take drugs which prevent the body from attacking the transplanted organ which is much like a foreign object in the body. The risk of body not supporting the new organ can be risky and dangerous.
  • The potential side-effect of taking anti-rejection drugs over long time is also not good and can be life threatening. Therefore patients are advised to have hysterectomy at some point which can be after one or two pregnancies.
