Fibrocystic breast changes, a common disease related to the breast is considered to be noncancerous. It has been found that more than half of all women have fibrocystic breasts at some point in their life and it can occur at any age. Research suggests that this condition is not very common among women after menopause and it can occur in one or both breasts and in more than one type of breast tissue.
Fibrocystic breast changes can occur as a result of monthly hormonal changes and should not be a cause of worry. However it is essential to get identify its symptoms and get treatment at the earliest because some may suggest a slightly increased risk of cancer.
Reasons for fibrocystic breast disease
The breast tissue happens to change over time in response to the hormones made by the ovaries. When someone has the problem of fibrocystic breast disease it means that the person will have more pronounced changed in response to such hormones. This often leads to the breast getting swollen and developing painful lumps.
The symptoms usually aggravate just before or during one’s period. It is common to feel lumps in the breasts caused by cysts, which are fluid filled sacs or swelling of the breast lobules, the milk-producing glands. During this time women suffering from the disease can also feel a lumpy thickening in the breast which is caused by an excess growth of fibrous tissues.
Research suggests that fibrocystic breast disease does not increase the risk of getting cancer but the changes that the breast goes through can in fact make it difficult for a doctor to identify any potential cancerous lumps.
Treatment for fibrocystic breast disease
Women facing the disease are usually suggested home treatment to relieve pain and discomfort. Home treatment for fibrocystic breast disease includes over-the-counter pain relievers, and certain other changes like, wearing a well-fitting supportive bra to reduce the breast pain and tenderness. Also, at times, warm and cold compresses can help to relieve from the pain.
Medical intervention may be required in some cases. This usually happens when the symptoms are severe and the patient requires serious treatment from a specialised doctor. Some of the medical treatments given by doctors include:
Birth control pills – These can help reduce any changes faced by the breasts which are caused by hormones.
Surgical procedure – Fine needle aspiration is done in some cases to remove the fluid formed in the cyst. This can relieve pain which is caused by larger cysts.
Lumpectomy – This is the surgical removal of cyst and is usually done when needle aspiration does not provide relief from the symptoms.
Other treatments method involves dietary changes, much like any complications, this too can be tackled to some degree with the help of a good diet. It is believed that limiting the intake of caffeine, eating low-fat diet and taking essential fatty acid supplements are all good dietary measures to treat fibrocystic breast disease.
