Fibroids are common benign tumours of the uterus (womb) which occur in up to 50% of all women. In most women they do not cause symptoms or problems and so they are usually unaware of its presence.

Expected duration of Fibroids

  • The number of fibroids, their size and how fast they will grow cannot be predicted and the rate of growth varies among women.
  • The female hormone Oestrogen tends to stimulate the growth of fibroids, so they continue growing until menopause. The fibroids may decrease in size after menopause (especially the smaller fibroids) but larger fibroids may change little or become slightly smaller in size.
  • The size of fibroids tends to increase during pregnancy (may increase by up to 30% and then shrink after delivery).
  • You may develop more fibroids after surgery for their removal such as myomectomy or hysteroscopic resection of fibroids.

Treatment for fibroid is not needed if it does not cause any symptoms, or the tumour is small especially in menopausal women. Your doctor may advise regular follow ups to monitor the size and growth of the fibroids and to ensure that there are no indicators of cancer.
