Brain Fog During Period: What Causes It And Ways To Manage The Condition?

Brain fog is a condition that became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is characterised by symptoms such as confusion, forgetfulness, and lack of mental clarity that can affect your daily activities. However, this condition existed long before the coronavirus hit us.

Factors such as sleep deprivation, stress, and autoimmune conditions like lupus and fibromyalgia can also contribute to it. Moreover, some women going through menstruation may also experience it. Explaining the link, Dr Sandhya Rani, Senior Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aster Women and Children Hospital, Bengaluru, attributes it to hormonal fluctuations, which are common during this period.

What Causes Brain Fog During Menstruation?

The major cause of brain fog during menstruation is hormonal fluctuations, especially oestrogen and progesterone levels, says Dr Rani, adding that these hormonal shifts may influence neurotransmitters in the brain, resulting in cognitive problems such as memory lapses and poor concentration.

This foggy feeling can also be contributed to by anxiety, poor sleep, and a lack of nutrients, she shares.

A 2015 review article published in the journal Frontiers of Neuroscience suggests that sex hormones like oestrogen and progesterone play a crucial role in shaping the brain by influencing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which are particularly important in brain regions like the hippocampus, known for its role in learning and memory. However, the study does not investigate the link between hormonal fluctuations and brain fog. In fact, there has been research that claims that there is no link between brain fog and hormonal changes that take place leading up to menstruation.

More research is needed to determine the link.

Are Some Women More Prone To Period-Associated Brain Fog Than Others?

Yes indeed!

“Some women are more prone to experiencing brain fog during their monthly periods than others,” says Dr Rani.

This includes those who have pre-existing conditions like PMS (premenstrual syndrome) or PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). According to the doctor, they tend to suffer the most.

Furthermore, females who are greatly stressed, get poor sleep, or lack essential nutrients in their bodies may find themselves affected by period-related cognitive troubles, she adds.

How To Reduce Brain Fog During Menstruation?

There are many effective strategies to manage and eliminate brain fog during menses. Dr Rani recommends eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring adequate sleep.

“Including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins in the diet can boost brain health in general. Flaxseeds and fish contain omega-3 fatty acids that are very beneficial,” she lists, advising further to lessen alcohol consumption during menstruation and avoiding caffeine at large.

Mindfulness or yoga can also be helpful stress management techniques, whereas hydrating oneself well while avoiding taking too much sugar can also aid in stabilising energy levels in the body, thus assisting proper thought patterns.

In cases of severe symptoms, seeking medical assistance is crucial for personalised insights, Dr Rani concludes.
