What is Beauty Therapy?

woman with bolw Beauty therapy, also known as cosmetology, is the most fundamental part of the beauty industry which incorporates a vast number of distinct disciplines such as hairstyling, manicures, pedicures, skin care, and appropriate use of cosmetics.

How to become a professional cosmetologist:

  • Many government recognised and private institutes offer integrated courses on cosmetology teaching various aspects of styling and beauty treatment. This includes even the most basic detail on techniques of shampooing of hair and shaping of nails.
  • A general certificate course on cosmetology usually takes one year to complete. One must opt for a licensed institute rather than choosing the most expensive ones. The difference between a cosmetologist and a usual barber is that the former would have in-depth knowledge on electric face masks, techniques of manicure and pedicure and the ability to study the skin (popularly known as skin mapping) apart from make-up, styling and cutting of hair.

A cosmetologist would also be skilled in different kinds of spa therapies and electrology (which means permanent removal of hair from the body with the help of laser).

Therefore, beauty therapy also incorporates the finer understanding of the didactics of the field in terms of understanding the pressure points of the skin (reflexology), the sweat glands, the anatomy and physiology of the body. One also gets to learn the art of applying makeup on face in terms of fashion and media makeup and everyday makeup skills through air brushing techniques. Other subjects within beauty therapy include nail art, hair dressing, and massaging techniques.
