Type 1 diabetes or juvenile diabetes is common in children and extremely rare in adults. When the body of a child or adolescent develops insulin resistance whether the body either doesn’t produce insulin or it becomes resistant to insulin. In either case, it doesn’t allow blood sugar to metabolizing. Since children are not aware of the signs and symptoms of this chronic disease, therefore, parents need to be vigilant towards the warning sign of type 1 diabetes.

Never ignore these signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes in children

Increased Urination

If your child suddenly starts to pee more than he used to, you must try to find the medical reason behind it. Increased urination is one of the first signs of diabetes in kids.

Increased Thirst

Frequent urination leads to loss of fluid from the body and to replenish that, you feel thirsty. While drinking water is a good practice, a sudden increase in water intake is not a good sign. You should consult a doctor to find if your child is in the prediabetes stage.

Increased Appetite

What we eat gets converted to glucose that is break down by the body to release energy. In diabetes, glucose breakdown gets affected which makes the person feel less-energetic. Thus, we feel more hungry and eat more. Increased appetite along with other warning signs may be due to type 1 diabetes.

Blurred Vision

Can diabetes affect vision? Yes. Fluids act as food for the eyes. It helps in the smooth stretching of the eye lens that is responsible for vision. Due to increased blood sugar, fluids levels are compromised and it leads to blurry vision. However, this change fluctuates with blood glucose levels.

Irritability and mood swings

Fluctuations in blood sugar also affect the mood of a person. Children get affected by this the most. When the blood sugar levels are high, it makes a person overwhelming. Similarly, low levels make us feel gloomy and underwhelming. While children generally show fluctuating mood, this might sign go unnoticed.

Children are a powerhouse of energy but type 1 diabetes condition decreases their energy levels and they feel fatigued. Since sugar isn’t utilised by the body, energy isn’t released. If your active child suddenly becomes inactive and show symptoms of weakness, you must get them tested for diabetes.

Bed Wetting

If your child has never bed wetted before and suddenly wetting the bed episodes occur, this is an alarming sign. We have already mentioned about frequent urination being a sign of diabetes, many times, they may urinate in the bed leading to bedwetting.

Fruity-Smelling Breath

Oral health indicates a lot about general health. In the case of diabetes, your breath may tell if you have diabetes or not. During diabetes, the body is unable to break down glucose and thus it utilizes fat to release energy. In this process, ketones are released(similar to what happens in the keto diet). These leave behind a fruity breath. This is weird but if your child smells fruity, get him checked.
