Diabetes was a part of Kiara’s life from her earliest memories, shaping her experiences in school and at home. Reflecting on her early years, she describes feelings of isolation and the bullying she endured due to misconceptions about her condition. "It was a lonely and isolating experience," she shares. "My extended family, too, were sometimes insensitive. I attribute this largely to the lack of awareness about diabetes and the various ways it impacts those who are afflicted by it."
Through all the ups and downs, Kiara's parents remained her unwavering support system. From homeschooling to support her demanding badminton schedule to encouraging her career in sports broadcasting, they stood by her side. Their commitment helped Kiara see that life with diabetes is not limited but rather an opportunity to push past boundaries.

Turning Challenges into Strengths
For Kiara, managing her condition has always involved facing multiple challenges. Hypoglycemic episodes, puberty, and sports training all presented complications. "A sports career is inherently challenging, and adding diabetes to the mix makes the journey so much more complex," she says. Despite the hurdles, her family’s strength and her determination to persevere kept her moving forward.
The challenges of diabetes require constant vigilance, but Kiara’s daily routines and support system help her manage her health effectively. Her focus on fitness, balanced nutrition, and self-awareness allows her to lead a full life. "Diabetes is all about balance," she says. “It’s about recognising patterns, being kind to yourself, and accepting that this journey is unique.”

Advocacy and Breaking Down Stereotypes
The misconceptions Kiara encountered motivated her to become a spokesperson for diabetes awareness. From classmates’ mothers mistakenly thinking diabetes was contagious to strangers mistaking her continuous glucose monitor for a "bottle cap glued to her arm", she’s seen how misinformation fuels stigma.
"My own experiences as a diabetic inspired me to advocate for awareness," Kiara says. "The misinformation around diabetes – from diagnosis to treatment – creates so much fear and misunderstanding." Her current campaign, #insulinsematdaro, focuses on demystifying insulin and its critical role in diabetes management, a campaign that aims to replace fear with education. She collaborates with renowned experts, including endocrinologist Dr Shashank Joshi and integrative lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho, to debunk myths and promote accurate information.

Kiara is a testament to her own message, "Diabetes is not the end of the world." Living proof that people with diabetes can achieve their dreams, she’s building a career as a sportscaster and continues to prioritise her fitness. "I practise boxing as a hobby," she explains. "It’s all about balance and acceptance," she adds, emphasising the importance of self-compassion in her journey.
Mental Health and Diabetes Management
Kiara stresses the importance of mental health in diabetes care. The daily demands of monitoring blood sugar and making lifestyle adjustments can take a toll, and she acknowledges that not every day is easy. "Mental health is one of the most important and most neglected aspects of diabetes management," she says. "I try to maintain a gratitude mindset, and my workouts keep me calm and focused." Her support system, especially her parents, helps her stay resilient on challenging days, and she urges others to be gentle with themselves.
Words of Encouragement for the Newly Diagnosed
To those recently diagnosed, Kiara offers words of strength and reassurance. "Diabetes isn’t the end of the road; it’s the beginning of a new journey. Approach it with acceptance, learn to listen to your body, and don’t be afraid to make lifestyle changes that support your health."
