Treatment of Perimenopause
Perimenopause is not a disease, but if it causes bothersome symptoms, consult your doctor. Many effective treatments are available for symptoms associated with perimenopause. Read further to know the treatment options for perimenopause symptoms.
Follow healthy lifestyle habits such as eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, learn relaxation techniques (such as meditation, breathing exercise). All of these can improve hot flushes. Medicines which can help to reduce hot flushes include short-term, low-dose hormone therapy; certain anti-depressants, clonidine (a high blood pressure medicine) and gabapentin (an anti-seizure medicine). Certain lifestyle habits which can probably worsen hot flushes include smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity.
If you have heavy menstrual bleeding in the perimenopause period (caused by very low or very high progesterone levels), it can be relived with progestin therapy. Your doctor will do tests to rule out other possible causes of progesterone level related imbalance. Other medications which can improve heavy menstrual bleeding include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), levonorgestrel (LNg) IUD, or birth control pills. If the blood loss is severe, your doctor may advise permanent surgical treatment. Surgical treatment options include removing the uterus (hysterectomy) or endometrial ablation. During endometrial ablation laser, electrical energy or heat is used to destroy the lining of the uterus (endometrium). This effectively decreases menstrual flow or can even put an end to menstruation.
Vaginal dryness and irritation
Decrease in levels of oestrogen can cause vaginal dryness and irritation. Use of vaginal lubricants can help to decrease dryness briefly and make sex more comfortable. Consult your doctor for a vaginal moisturiser (it can help retain the needed moisture in your vagina). If you have thin vaginal skin, dryness, and/or irritation, a low dose of vaginal oestrogen creams are a good choice. The amount of oestrogen absorbed into your system with vaginal use is less, hence it is safer and the risks associated with HRT (hormone replacement therapy) are less likely.
Many women may be prescribed low dose oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) to relive perimenopausal symptoms. They are often the most effective treatment for perimenopausal symptoms. It can effectively control and regulate periods, reduce hot flushes and vaginal dryness. Besides this they can also prevent accidental pregnancy.
