First, let me clear this out once and for all, tomato is a fruit. Tomato are consumed at a wide scale all over the world in salads, sandwiches, with vegetables and different meals. However, not all the people are able to enjoy this tangy fruit and enjoy it. This is because, some people are allergic to tomatoes and coming in close contact or eating it can cause reactions on the skin, nose and respiratory system. Tomato allergy is a serious condition, and what you may not know is that famous singer, Arian Grande, also has sensitivity to tomatoes. What is Tomato Allergy?
As we spoke to Dr. Sumeet Nigam, General Physician at Sahara Hospital, Lucknow, we came to know that it is a type 1 hypersensitivity problem. This occurs because of coming in contact with tomato, which is the allergen here. Histamines that are released into these exposed areas like skin, nose and respiratory tracts actually affect your body. In Indian household tomato is consumed and present in almost every dish or meal that is prepared. But this is not so common in western countries, where the cases of tomato allergy are relatively more.
Symptoms of Tomato Allergy
Tomato allergy can be quite irritating and can cause similar symptoms to other allergic reactions, here are few symptoms which could determine tomato allergy in body-
- Skin rashes, eczema or hives
- Having abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting
- Itching in throat and irritability
- Coughing, sneezing or wheezing
- Swelling on the face or throat
- Swelling on tongue
- Condition of anaphylaxis

Ariana Grande and Tomato Allergy
Superstar singer Ariana Grande got her two shows cancelled in 2019, when she suddenly got allergic reaction to tomatoes. The singer of famous song, “Thank u, Next” told her fans through Instagram that she unfortunately had this allergic reaction to tomatoes and her throat was pretty much closed. She said that she is having problems in swallowing and it pains quite a lot. Fortunately, she recovered soon after that and was back to her bang on performances.
Ariana Grande also joked about her being an Italian woman developing an allergy to tomatoes in her mid-twenties, quite a strange incident. She calls it very unfair as love for tomatoes in Italy needs no explanation. This shows that adults can also develop allergy to tomatoes and the reactions could be from mild to worse.
Tomato Allergy Eczema
Eczema occurs to only 10% of people who have food allergies. However, in case of tomatoes, the percentage of cases are even more because of irritants. Tomato allergy eczema is most common in people susceptible to this allergen. Symptoms of allergy related eczema can typically have immediate effect on your body. Get rashes, severe itching, swelling and redness in a few hours of coming in contact with the allergen.

Test and Treatment for Tomato Allergy
There are two major methods to confirm tomato allergy. One way is to conduct a skin prick test that determines the presence of allergens in the body. The other method is to get a blood test done which detects immunoglobulin E levels in the blood. Talking of treatment of tomato allergy, avoiding the allergen is always the best option.
If you have got a tomato allergic reaction, then it could be treated by giving antihistamines and tropical steroidal ointments. Both of them reduce the allergic rashes and lower down the symptoms in a couple of days. You should be very careful about any type of such allergic allergies, especially while eating out or taking a meal without knowing what in it.
