Blinking Eyes Frequently? Expert Explains Reason Tips For Treatment

Frequent blinking can have various causes, and while occasional blinking is normal, persistent or excessive blinking may be indicative of an underlying issue.

“Usually blinking of eyes occurs due to eye twitching in infants or a foreign particle that causes eye irritation. Both of these disorders can be managed automatically by using medication eye drops,” said Dr Pramod Kumar from BNK Hospital, Kochi.  Here are some potential reasons for frequent blinking and tips for treatment:

Dry Eyes

Insufficient tear production or poor tear quality can lead to dry eyes, causing discomfort and prompting increased blinking. You can consult with a doctor for eye drops to alleviate dryness. Ensure adequate hydration and consider using a humidifier in dry environments.

Eye Strain or Fatigue

Prolonged periods of staring at screens or reading without breaks can strain the eye muscles, leading to increased blinking. Follow the 20-20-20 rule—take a break every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Adjust screen settings for better visibility and ensure proper lighting.

Excess Screen Time

There are several possible causes of eye strain. Most people suffer from it as a result of excessive screen time and work pressure, among other factors.

According to Dr Kumar, reducing your exposure to things that cause eye strain may help cure it. You should also avoid working or spending too much time in front of a computer.

Stress or Anxiety

Stress and anxiety can manifest in physical symptoms, including increased blinking of eye twitching. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga. Consider seeking professional help for stress management.

Blepharospasm

Blepharospasm is an involuntary, repetitive closure of the eyelids and can cause frequent blinking. Consult with a doctor for an accurate diagnosis. Treatment may involve medications, botulinum toxin injections, or surgical interventions in severe cases.

Conjunctivitis

Inflammation of the conjunctiva, often due to bacterial or viral infection, can lead to increased blinking. Consult with an eye doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. Antibiotic or antiviral eye drops may be prescribed.

Tics or Habitual Blinking

In some cases, frequent blinking may be a tic or a habitual behaviour. Behavioural therapy or counselling may be beneficial in addressing habitual blinking. Consult with a doctor for appropriate interventions.

Neurological Conditions

Certain neurological conditions, such as Tourette syndrome or Parkinson's disease, can be associated with increased blinking. People with neurological conditions may require specialised care.

If you or someone you know is experiencing persistent or bothersome frequent blinking, it's important to seek advice from a doctor or an eye specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, identify the underlying cause, and recommend appropriate treatment options based on the specific diagnosis.

Early intervention is essential for addressing any potential underlying issues and preventing further discomfort or complications.
