Winter Proofing your Skin: Tips For A Healthy And Well-Nurtured Skin

In winters, the low temperature, low relative humidity causes dryness of skin. Conditions such as asteatotic eczemas, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis may even worsen during winters. The cold and dry weather conditions also favour the manifestation of sensitive skin. The symptoms of dry skin in winters include flaking, rough patches, cracks, itching, stinging, and a raw sensitivity to the touch feeling. The symptoms may worsen due to the cold, dry winds, dry indoor air from heating systems, bathing too often, prolonged baths with hot water using harsh soaps and detergents.

Skincare To Prevent Recurrence of Dry Skin

“Following the same skin care routine throughout the year may not be beneficial to combat dry skin and sensitive skin during winters. A few changes in the skin care routine can help heal the dry skin and prevent its recurrence. These measures include avoiding long showers and harsh soaps and frequent baths with hot water,” said Dr Rashmi Naldeega, consultant Dermatologist on Practo, adding, it is rather advisable to take short 5-10 min showers with lukewarm water and immediately wiping with a towel and applying moisturiser to lock the moisture in. Syndet bathing bars can be used instead of soaps.  Infact, the American academy of Dermatologists recommended usage of moisturisers that contain hyaluronic acid, lanolin, petrolatum, shea butter, and jojoba oil.

“Wear a lip balm to prevent chapped lips. Keep yourself hydrated. Wear comfortable clothing and use detergents that are hypoallergenic to wash clothes. Avoid exfoliating agents like glycolic acid, salicylic acid and retinoids,” Dr Naldeega added.

Always use a sunscreen with SPF above 30. Using a humidifier or alternatively placing a bowl of water above the radiator that causes the water vapour to rise along with the heat generated can help prevent the drying effect caused by heaters. Treatment of skin conditions like asteatotic eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis is essential.

What One Should Use For Sensitive Skin

“In today's modern society, sensitive skin has become a common concern, often exacerbated by the use of cosmetics and toiletries, particularly during the winter months. Hence, I recommend steering clear of certain substances that can trigger skin irritation, such as alpha hydroxy acid, alcohol, and fragrances,” said Dr Naldeega. It's also wise to avoid volatile ingredients like menthol and substances that enhance skin penetration, like propylene glycol. Instead select polyethylene glycol which doesn't penetrate the stratum corneum of the skin. Additionally, opting for powder cosmetics is generally a safer choice.

“Choose cosmetics that are easily removable with water. For eye cosmetics, consider using black eyeliners & mascara and other light earthy tone eyeshadows. For eyeliners and eyebrows it is preferable to use the ones in pencil form. When selecting cosmetic products, lean towards those with fewer than 10 ingredients,” Dr Naldeega concluded. Also, avoid using nail polishes. By following these straightforward measures and making a few adjustments to your regular skincare routine, you can effectively address dryness and skin sensitivity, especially during the winter season.
