Stomach acid flowing backward into the oesophagus is known as acid reflux. During normal digestion, the muscles in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relax and open to allow food to pass from your mouth into your stomach. The LES closes as soon as food leaves the stomach to keep the acidic contents from coming back up into the esophagus. 

If the LES doesn’t close properly, stomach contents can splash into the esophagus. This results in a common digestive disorder in which the stomach contents reflux up into the esophagus.

  • Heartburn - People with acid reflux often feel a burning sensation in the center of their chests. This symptom is commonly known as heartburn. 
  • Bad taste in your mouth: A symptom that many people don’t think about is a bad taste in your mouth. The acid in the reflux can irritate the taste buds in your throat.
  • Regurgitation: Acid reflux patients may experience a sour taste in the back of their mouths, as well as a coated or furry sensation on their tongues. This can be a sign of regurgitation, or bringing up partially digested food from the stomach back into the oesophagus.

  • Poorly managed stress or anxiety: An overactive or poorly managed stress response causes a drop in blood pressure, which can lead to acid reflux. 
  • Poorly managed diet: Certain foods, particularly those that are rich in fats and sugars, can cause acid reflux. 
  • Lack of sleep: A lack of sleep can cause an overactive stress response, which can lead to acid reflux. 
  • An unbalanced microbiome: An unbalanced microbiome can cause an increase in the amount of harmful bacteria, which can lead to acid reflux.

Managing your acid reflux involves some lifestyle changes, like eating a clean and healthy diet and managing your stress.

Getting enough sleep is crucial for managing stress. It’s also important for managing acid reflux. Eating at least two hours before bedtime can help to reduce your risk of heartburn and acid reflux.

If your symptoms are not improving after three months or if they are getting worse, then it’s time to see your doctor. Your doctor will be able to assess your condition and recommend the best course of treatment for you.
