Saving yourself from the bugs and illnesses associated with winter need not be a difficult task if you . There are some effective steps you can take to prevent any ailments that may inhibit your ability to work, study or play. The most basic tip is to wrap up warm and don’t leave yourself unnecessarily exposed to the winter elements.
If you’re going out for a significant period of time, put on appropriate clothing and bring a warm jacket with you regardless of the weather; winter temperature can drop like a stone in a matter of minutes.
Invest in a “winter set”; the hat, scarf and gloves combination. They cover up the critically exposed areas of your body where crucial heat is lost. You’ll feel a lot warmer and safer with these.
When you are feeling the winter chill, there’s nothing like getting some home-made, hot food into your system. It will warm you up straight away and reduce the chances of catching a cold; hot vegetable soup is an excellent example of this, and it’s peppered with anti-oxidants as well.
Increase your vitamin C intake by eating more concentrated fruit or by simply taking supplements. It’s well documented that vitamin C is productive in the treatment of a winter cold, but when taken regularly, it is also an excellent preventer as the saying goes "prevention is better than a cure".
A healthy diet is of course the paragon; fresh fruit and vegetables, with the recommended intake of meat and fish, supplemented by the required vitamins and minerals. If you are not following a healthy dietary programme, then you may be leaving yourself open to certain bugs and illnesses. Drinking about two litres of water a day is also important.
If you have something very important coming up this winter, then you should consider getting the flu-jab. Influenza is a highly contagious virus and can render you useless for a number of days, so you are in effect compromising your crucial appointment by not acting now.
To minimise the spread of infection, maintain high levels of hygiene. Be responsible; winter bugs can be easily transferred from one person to another. Wash your hands regularly and eradicate your infected tissues where possible, by burning them or flushing them down the toilet.
It might be cold and miserable outside, but you still need to stay active. Running, walking or swimming helps the blood circulation in your body; it is vital that every cell and organ is functioning properly and blood circulation is crucial for this to happen.
It’s recommended that we get between 6-8 hours of sleep every night, but some people can function on less and others need more. If you are constantly feeling tired or run down, your immune system may not be on alert, so your body may be vulnerable to infection.
Reduce your alcohol intake; excessive drinking can also impede your immune system and leave you open to attack.
