What Are Possible Reasons for Cancer Relapse?

Dr Harshit Shah, Associate Surgical Oncologist, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, discussed the factors contributing to breast cancer relapse. He emphasised both patient-related and cancer-related aspects. He explained, “If a patient undergoes surgery where only the tumour is removed, leaving the rest of the breast intact, the presence of dense fibrous tissue or any precancerous lesions significantly increases the likelihood of recurrence.” Some of the other reasons are mentioned below.

  • Cancer Personality Plays Role: Aggressive cancers (like triple-negative or HER2-positive) are more likely to reappear than other types.
  • Every Patient Needs Custom Care: The best protection? Treatment plans should be made specially for each patient's unique cancer situation.

How Can Breast Cancer Relapse Be Treated?

If breast cancer comes back, treatment depends on where it returns:

  • Local relapse (in the breast)
  • Regional relapse (in nearby lymph nodes)

The doctors may also suggest the following:

  • Chemotherapy: Strong medicines that kill cancer cells everywhere in the body. Used for fast-growing cancers.
  • Radiation: High-energy beams to destroy cancer cells left after surgery. Lowers the chance of cancer returning.
  • Immunotherapy: Boosts your immune system to fight cancer naturally.
  • Hormone Therapy: Blocks hormones that feed certain breast cancers (works only for hormone-sensitive types).
  • Targeted Drugs: Special medicines that attack specific cancer cell weaknesses (HER2-positive cancers).

Conclusion

Tahira Kashyap's cancer relapse update is a testament to the strength and courage that defines her. As she embarks on this new chapter in her cancer journey, her determination to spread awareness and inspire others is more evident than ever. Her message serves as a reminder to us all: early detection is key, and a positive attitude can make all the difference in overcoming life's challenges. However, her strong advocacy towards the detection of cancer relapse serves as a wake-up call.
