Disruption in muscle movement patterns can cause serious adversities to your health. Muscle movements are normally controlled by complex system that allows muscle to contract, while the others can relax. Any damage to the system that control these movement can cause serious injuries and nerve damage. It may even lead to serious brain and spinal cord injury. Spasticity is usually caused in the legs but it can even affect your arms.  


Symptoms of Spasticity 

There can be number of prevalent muscle problems that could occur because of spasticity, here are some common symptoms of this muscle condition.  

  • Increased muscle tone 
  • Involuntary movements such as spasms or clonus 
  • Pain or discomfort in the limbs 
  • Less ability to function 
  • Problems regarding care and hygiene 
  • Abnormal posture 
  • Contracture or permanent contraction of muscles 
  • Bone or joint deformities 
  • Decreased quality of life

When can you treat spasticity? 

Spasticity is usually treated when it causes severe pain or interferes with your daily activity. If you have problems related to your sleep or you have less ability to function and get fatigue very easily, then you should get this condition treated. Treatment is based on the patient's needs, preferences and goals and stage of condition.

  • There would be two ways to reduce spasticity. It could be controlled by- 
  • By performing exercises on the daily basis, it should contain more of stretching exercises. Prolonged exercises can make sure that muscles move for a longer period of time and prevent contracture.  
  • Splinting, casting and bracing. These are three methods that are used for long term motion and flexibility.
