It adds great taste to your cup of tea. But there are many misconceptions and claims associated with ginger tea. Some people say that ginger tea is the best remedy for cough and many respiratory ailments. Various studies also suggest that ginger can minimise blood pressure issues as well. Ginger is also known for its properties which can reduce the risk of certain cancers. Ginger contains a compound called gingerol that suppresses tumor growth.

  • You should not consume more than 4g of ginger tea in a day. It is believed that ginger can increase the production of bile in your body. But there are no certain medical evidences which can prove it. Hence you must consult your doctor before consuming ginger tea to treat gallbladder conditions.
  • Excess consumption of ginger tea can also give you heartburn and can upset your stomach. Ginger primarily is classified under spices and can give you the exact burning sensation that chilies and other spicy food can give you.  
  • If you are allergic to ginger, you can get rashes or irritation in your mouth or stomach after drinking ginger tea.
  • Ginger tea can also lower your blood pressure and can make you feel dizzy very often.
  • Ginger contains salicylates, which acts as a blood thinner causing ailments in people with bleeding disorders.
  • If you consume too much ginger on a regular basis then you may suffer from diarrhea. Ginger increases the passage of food and stool through the intestine. Overconsumption will lead to frequent passage of stool and will further lead to diarrhea.
  • Ginger tea can affect your stomach and digestion in various ways. It can disturb your digestion and can also lead to gas.
  • Another problem faced after consumption of ginger tea on a regular basis is mouth irritation. The irritation can be due to the strong taste. Some people may find the taste unpleasant as well. Other reasons behind irritation can be a certain allergy.
  • Ginger tea can also trigger heart conditions. As it interferes the blood pressure of a person. A person may experience a sudden drop in blood pressure which can further lead to an irregular heartbeat. If you have any heart condition you must avoid or reduce consumption of ginger tea.

Ginger tea is traditionally consumed to heal stomach ailments but it can also be consumed to control nausea. Consumption of ginger tea right after a chemotherapy session can help reduce nausea. Also, it can give you relief from morning sickness that happens during pregnancy. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor before taking ginger tea during pregnancy, or cancer therapy or any sort of surgery. You should also avoid ginger tea if you have kidney stones.
