Why Are Heart Attacks Becoming Common Among the Young?

In one of our previous articles, Dr Prateek Chaudhary, Senior Consultant – Interventional Cardiology at Asian Hospital, Faridabad, explained that the main reason for this rise lies in how we live today.

He points out a few key lifestyle factors behind this surge:

  • Unhealthy diet and obesity: Processed foods, sugary snacks, and excess salt can lead to artery blockage and raise blood pressure.
  • Sedentary lifestyle: Long hours in front of screens with little movement can slow circulation and add strain to the heart.
  • Substance use: Smoking, vaping, or recreational drug use damages blood vessels and increases plaque formation.
  • Chronic stress: Continuous pressure from work, finances, or even social media leads to inflammation and heart strain.

Dr Chaudhary added that even young people in their 20s and 30s are now facing cardiac issues that were once seen mostly in older adults, largely due to lifestyle and mental stress.

Expert-Backed Tips to Lower the Risk

To help prevent such tragedies, Dr Chaudhary shared a few important preventive measures that every young adult should follow:

  • Avoid an unhealthy diet: Cut down on fried foods, red meat, and processed snacks. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
  • Stay active: Even 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week can make a big difference.
  • Never ignore warning signs: Chest pain, jaw tightness, or shortness of breath should not be brushed off. Seek immediate help.
  • Quit smoking or vaping: These are among the biggest risk factors for heart disease.
  • Go for regular check-ups: High blood pressure and cholesterol often show no early symptoms. Routine screenings can save lives.
  • Manage stress: Practice mindfulness, take regular breaks, and prioritise sleep.

Dr Chaudhary also reminded that a heart attack is a medical emergency if you or someone near you experiences chest pain or discomfort, seek emergency medical care immediately.
