Expert Talk: Does Consumption Of Rice Cause Excessive Weight Gain

Rice is a staple food for over half of our total population. It is one of the most consumed grains, and can be taken in many forms owing to its versatility. While rice remains one of the most preferred foods, the question that boggles everyone’s mind is, does rice make you gain excessive weight? Most people blame rice for their growing bellies. To get better insights about this dilemma, Onlymyhealth editorial team spoke to Miten Kakaiya, Fitness Coach and founder of Miten Says Fitness, to know if rice can make you fat.

Is rice the reason behind your growing belly?

The answer is NO! Rice or any particular food cannot and will not be the reason for your protruding belly. Instead, rice acts as a source of energy and should be a part of your diet. Mindless eating is the main cause behind weight gain. In a healthy diet, every food, including vegetables, salads, soups, and even smoothies, should be consumed in moderation (a quantity which is right as per your body weight, body type, body condition, and activity levels). Likewise, rice can be a part of your daily meals, but in the right quantity.

Research has shown that the only reason your body starts to store fat is because of the excess energy you consume in the form of food. And, this excess energy can come from any food source, not just rice. Even healthy foods can make you gain fat if consumed in amounts that exceed what your body needs in a day. If you are unsure of what this quantity is or how you can include rice in your daily diet, consult an expert to plan out your meals.

Should you avoid eating rice for dinner?

Another common question regarding the consumption of rice is if one should avoid eating it for dinner? Rice is not the reason why you might be gaining weight. What’s making you gain fat is the excess calories that you are knowingly or unknowingly consuming. As long as you keep the calories you consume through rice well within your daily calorie limit, it will not interfere with your weight loss goals.

And since that is the case, you can continue to consume rice at any time throughout the day, even post sunset or close to bedtime. Rice is easy to digest and can be eaten as steamed rice, curd rice, pulao, khichdi, and even dosas. As long as you keep enjoying it in moderate quantities and stick to your daily calorie limit. Kakaiya adds, "This is a huge myth. Rice cannot and will never make you fat."
