Ramayan Creator’s Son, Prem Sagar, Dies After a Battle With Prolonged Illness


Prem Sagar, the son of the great filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, who produced the most popular TV series Ramayan, died in the morning of August 31, 2025. He was 84 years old. Prem was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai but he was discharged home on doctor advice just before his death without any complication. His final rites were held the same day at Pawan Hans cremation ground in Mumbai. His demise has thrown a heavy gloom on the film and TV industry and on viewers of the classic series.

Prem Sagar had been battling a prolonged illness for some time. Though the exact nature of his illness was not publicly disclosed, reports confirm he was under medical care before his passing. On the day he died, doctors advised his family to take him home, and he passed away peacefully a few hours later. His fight with illness marked the end of a significant chapter in Indian television history.

Who was Prem Sagar?

Prem Sagar was not only the son of Ramanand Sagar, but he was a well-known producer and cinematographer himself. He also had close links with the Sagar Arts banner and produced a number of mythological and fantasy television series, such as the legendary Ramayan which premiered in 1987. He was a well-trained film and television still photographer and film and television director of photography, having attended the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. 

Ramayan actors such as Arun Govil (Lord Ram), Sunil Lahiri (Laxman), and others took to social media, shedding tears about their loss, as he had helped them introduce the teachings of Lord Ram to people over television.

Prem Sagar had expressed interest in continuing the family legacy and was planning to create a new version of Ramayan. While acknowledging the challenge of living up to his father’s legendary work, he wanted to offer a fresh take on the epic for modern audiences. His passing leaves a void in the world of mythological TV shows and Indian film history. Yet, his work continues to inspire many across generations.
