If there is any problem that troubles our nose, then we get irritated. In times of common cold also, our nose becomes red and swells up. Nasal congestion does not seem to stop early because of which it affects nose tissues and makes them to swell up. Nose swelling is a common condition but most of the people do not know about the ways to treat it. Also, it is absolutely necessary to understand the symptoms to prevent the swelling beforehand to prevent severities. Nose swelling or nasal polyps can be very discomforting, thus you need know about these following conditions about it.  

What causes swelling in nose? 

Swelling in the nose can be caused because of various reasons, however it is the result of inflammation that takes place inside the nasal mucosa. We spoke to Dr. Supreet Nigam, General Physician from Sahara Hospital, Lucknow in order to understand the causes of swelling in the nose and how to tackle it. He explained that there is mucosa, usually known as mucus that provides with a protective layer against any kind of inflammation or infection.

The wet layer present inside your nose actually humidifies the air you breathe. When there is some sort of infection, then the allergen induces irritation and the mucosa becomes swollen and red. It may produce fluid and drip out, due to prolonged irritation, the mucosa can lead to a polyp. It is basically a round growth that helps to block the nasal passage.  

Conditions causing Nose Swelling 

It might be possible that people develop nasal polyps with no particular reason or health condition. But in other ways, there could be a number of conditions that could lead to trigger of developing swelling. Here are the following conditions that could affect your health- 

  • Chronic or recurring sinus infection  
  • Asthma 
  • Allergic rhinitis or hay fever 
  • Due to cystic fibrosis 
  • Sensitivity to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs 
  • Churg-Strauss syndrome 

Also, some hereditary conditions or polyps could be affected because of genes. This influences the way that mucosa reacts to infection and inflammation in the body.

Symptoms of Nasal Swelling 

Nose swelling are usually soft, it is painless and grows inside the nasal passage. They actually occur in the area in nose where upper sinus is located. Sinuses drain into your nose and thus you might not be able to know that nasal polyps could be because of lack of nerve sensation.  

Swelling can occur in the nose because of nasal passages. This could lead to chronic congestion and thus affect your health in the adverse way. Here are some symptoms that could reflect upon nasal swelling or nasal polyps.  

  • Runny nose 
  • Sensation of nose blockage 
  • Stuffiness in the nose  
  • Nasal congestion 
  • Sleep apnea 
  • Breathing from the mouth 
  • Unable to smell or reduced sensation to smell 
  • Snoring 
  • Feeling pressure of forehead or face 
  • Postnasal drip

Treatment of Nose Swelling 

This is not a very serious condition and can occur to almost anyone. There are number of methods that can be used to reduce and treat nose swelling. Here are some methods that you can use in order to reduce the inflammation- 

Medications 

Medications are the most common treatment for this and effective too. Medicines can reduce the swelling or polyp and can relieve symptoms. It can especially help to reduce the congestion that is usually caused and spraying nasal steroids and have an immediate effect on the runny nose of sensation of blockage by shrinking it.

Surgery 

In case the symptoms of nose swelling are not improving, then you might opt for surgical method. Even though this is not suggested by most doctors, until the swelling goes out of hands. A polypectomy is actually an outpatient surgery that is done by a small suction device and cuts through the soft tissues in the mucosa. For larger polyps, doctor might consider an endoscopic sinus surgery by using a thin, flexible endoscope that contains a tiny camera on the tools end.
