Myth 1: Prostate cancer exclusively affects older men

Fact: “Although the risk rises with age, prostate cancer can impact men of various age groups, including younger individuals. While most diagnoses occur in men aged 65 and older, it is not limited to this demographic”, said Dr Agrawal.

Myth 2: Absence of symptoms means you cannot have prostate cancer

Fact: Early-stage prostate cancer frequently manifests without symptoms. Symptoms tend to emerge in later stages. “Some indicators may include difficulties initiating or stopping urine flow, a frequent and urgent need to urinate, particularly at night, blood in the urine or semen, and challenges with achieving or sustaining an erection”, added Dr Agrawal.

Myth 3: Prostate cancer inevitably leads to death

Fact: While prostate cancer is a grave condition, the majority of men diagnosed with it do not succumb to the disease. Dr Agrawal said, “In reality, the 5-year survival rate stands at 98.6%. Timely detection is crucial as it can enhance survival rates.”

According to Cancer.Net, survival rates for prostate cancer depend on multiple factors, such as the cancer's stage and grade, the individual's age and overall health, and the effectiveness of the treatment plan. Additionally, the type of prostate cancer can also influence outcomes.

Myth 4: Undergoing vasectomy raises the chance of developing prostate cancer

Fact: “Existing research does not have consistent support that shows the connection between vasectomy and an elevated risk of prostate cancer”, highlighted Dr Agrawal.

Genes and family history are risk factors

Men who have a family history of prostate cancer are more vulnerable. The likelihood is increased if one has a close relative who has the condition, particularly a father or brother.

According to StatPearls, men with a family history of prostate cancer are at higher risk compared to the general population. The risk escalates more significantly if a brother is affected rather than a father, and it further rises if the relative develops the disease at an early age (under 55 years).

Importance of testing for early detection

Frequent screenings, like the Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) and the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test, can aid in the early detection of prostate cancer when it is more manageable.

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer can be detected by assessment of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) levels in the bloodstream. Another method of detecting prostate cancer involves a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), wherein a doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to palpate the prostate gland.

The risk may be influenced by lifestyle and diet

“A diet high in fruits, vegetables, and specific nutrients may reduce the incidence of prostate cancer, according to some research. Keeping a healthy weight and engaging in regular exercise are some factors that enhance general well-being”, added Dr Agrawal.
