What Is Glioblastoma?

Glioblastoma is a type of brain cancer that starts in the brain’s supportive cells called astrocytes. It is classified as a grade 4 tumour, which means it is the most aggressive and fast-growing form of brain cancer. Dr BSV Raju, Senior Consultant Neuro and Spine Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, explains, “Glioblastoma, a lethal, complex, and treatment-resistant cancer, constitutes over 50% of adult cases of cancerous brain tumours. It is a malignancy that begins with the development of cells in the brain or spinal cord, grows rapidly, and can invade and destroy healthy tissue.” This cancer can occur in any part of the brain, but is most often found in the frontal and temporal lobes.

Michael Bolton’s Experience

Michael Bolton’s diagnosis brought the reality of glioblastoma into the public eye. After collapsing unexpectedly, he underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumour. He later had a second surgery due to an infection and then completed chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In April 2025, Bolton shared that his latest MRI scans showed no signs of cancer, a hopeful milestone in his fight. Reflecting on his journey, Bolton said, “You tap into inner strength you never knew existed. Giving up isn’t an option.” His openness about the emotional and physical challenges has inspired many facing similar battles.

Symptoms of Glioblastoma

The symptoms of glioblastoma can vary depending on the tumour’s size and location. Common signs include persistent headaches that often worsen in the morning, nausea and vomiting, seizures, blurred or double vision, and episodes of blackouts. Some patients may also experience personality changes, confusion, or memory problems. Because these symptoms can be similar to other conditions, glioblastoma is sometimes diagnosed late, which makes treatment more difficult.

Why Is Glioblastoma So Deadly?

Glioblastoma is one of the deadliest cancers because it grows very fast and spreads into healthy brain tissue. Unlike some tumours that form a clear mass, glioblastoma has ‘tentacles’  that invade surrounding areas. It makes it nearly impossible to remove completely through surgery. Even after surgery, microscopic cancer cells remain, which often cause the tumour to grow back. The average survival time after diagnosis is about 12 to 18 months, despite aggressive treatment.
