  • Major health issues of mother like cancer also need an abortion.

Terminating a pregnancy is always a difficult decision but sometimes it may have to be to done keeping the mother and child’s best interests in mind.

medical reasons for abortionSome medical reasons for which abortion may be done include:

Genetic Disorders: If the foetus is diagnosed with some serious type of genetic disorder like Down’s syndrome, some type of serious metabolic disorder which might make life painful once the child is born then the parents may want to consider abortion. However according to pro-life advocates having the child and trying to love them is always the better option.

Mother’s medical problems: If the mother has some medical condition which can be complicated by pregnancy and would endanger the mother’s health and life may necessitate abortion of the foetus. The mother can take care and treatment for her health and then decide to conceive when her body will be able to support the growing foetus.

Mother's Lifestyle Habits:
A substantial health reason why a woman would need an abortion is if she were an alcoholic. Alcoholism adversely affects the baby resulting in FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) in which the alcohol severely inhibits the baby's brain development, leading to loss of gross and fine motor skills, speech defects (including being mute), deafness, vision impairment and retardation.

Impending Miscarriage: At times in a pregnancy it is clear that a miscarriage is going to take place. In the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, this usually occurs when foetal heartbeat is not detected by ultrasound or heartbeat monitor. Another sign if impending miscarriage is decrease in blood levels of HCG. If it is evident that miscarriage will take place a woman may decide to for abortion in order to prevent prolonging the pregnancy and going through the miscarriage. Miscarriage has more risks for a woman's health and complications such as haemorrhage, infertility, products of conception being left in the uterus and pain than an abortion.

Birth Defects: Prenatal testing allows for the detection of many types of birth defects in pregnancy. If the tests such as ultrasound, blood tests and amniocentesis, show that the foetus is at risk for birth defects, or there is a definitive severe defect such as Trisomy 13 and Potter's Syndrome the parents may opt for an abortion.

Many strong opinions exist about how and when abortion should happen. There is general agreement, however, that abortion is acceptable when medical issues justify it.
