Marijuana can help prevent Brain Damage

Researchers from The University of Tel Aviv have found that extremely low doses of THC, which is the psychoactive component of marijuana helps to protect the brain from long term cognitive damage in the wake of injury from lack of oxygen, seizers or toxic drugs. Brain damage can have consequences on a person ranging from mild cognitive deficits to severe neurological damage.

Extreme low doses of THC, which is around 1,000 to10,000 times less than that it is in a conventional marijuana cigarette has shown a wide window of 1 to 7 days before or 1 to 3 days after the injury can jumpstart biochemical processes which project brain cells and preserve cognitive function over time. The research was done by Prof. Yosef Same of Tel Aviv University’s Adelson Center for the Biology of Addictive Disease at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine.

Prof. Same said that the marijuana treatment in light of long time frame for administration and low dosage has been found to be applicable to many cases of brain injury and can be safer over time.
Prof. Same mentioned that while performing experiments on the biology of cannabis, his fellow researchers discovered how low doses of the drug can have a big impact on cell signaling, preventing cell death and promoting growth factors. With this finding came in a series of experiments that were designed to test the neuroprotective ability of THC in response to various brain injuries.

A control group of mice sustained brain injury but did not receive the THC treatment. When the mice were examined 3 to 7 weeks after initial injury, recipients of the THC treatment performed better in behavioral tests measuring learning and memory.
