September 10 Was World Suicide Prevention Day

The shocking news comes after a day of World Suicide Prevention Day, observed to raise awareness that suicide can be prevented.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 7.2 lakh people die due to suicide every year. It is the third leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds, and 73% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.

The cause of suicide can be multi-faceted, influenced by social, cultural, biological, psychological, and environmental factors present across the life-course, the WHO highlights.

Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, Debasmita Sinha, Chief Psychologist and Senior Director - Clinical Excellence at Manah Wellness, said, "Recognizing signs of suicidal behavior in someone is crucial. You may notice them withdrawing from others, skipping social activities, or avoiding contact more than usual. Sudden changes in mood, like being unusually sad or irritable, or talking about feeling stuck or hopeless, are also red flags. They might struggle with daily responsibilities, missing deadlines, or showing a lack of care for things they usually prioritize. Additionally, conversations about death or giving away cherished possessions without a clear reason can indicate distress. If you're concerned, it's important to have a private conversation, letting them know you're there for them and listening without judgment. Encourage them to seek professional help, and if needed, inform someone who can intervene. Most importantly, keep checking in, showing them they are not alone."
