Lean PCOS: Expert Lists Its Challenges And How To Deal With Emotional And Psychological Aspects Of Infertility

Most of us know about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS),  a hormonal disorder attributed to an overproduction of androgens, which include hormones like testosterone and DHEA. But do you know what lean PCOS is and how it affects your fertility? We spoke to Dr B Ramesh, Gynaecologist, Founder and Medical Director, Altius Hospital, who explained lean PCOS, its challenges, and how you can deal with its emotional and psychological aspects.

Dr Ramesh highlighted, “Lean PCOS, as the name suggests, does not involve weight gain or obesity. A person's BMI might be healthy, but they could still have PCOS with other symptoms. Therefore, it could be even more challenging to diagnose.” According to the Journal of Human Reproductive Sciences, around 80% of PCOS diagnoses are in individuals who are overweight or obese, with lean PCOS constituting approximately 20% of cases.

Challenges With Lean PCOS

Dr Ramesh added, “When the symptoms are not very prominent, it becomes all the more challenging for women suffering from Lean PCOS as their problems may seem invisible to the world. Since PCOS also leads to infertility, this adds to that burden and can lead to a lack of understanding in their social circles.”

He added, “Infertility has long been a deeply personal struggle for women. Individuals with Lean PCOS may feel the weight of these expectations even more keenly as they defy the stereotype of PCOS patients. This leads to feelings of not being enough and self-doubt. Conceiving with lean PCOS is a rollercoaster ride. The journey can be emotionally draining, with irregular ovulation patterns and unpredictable cycles.”

Recognising Lean PCOS-related infertility's emotional and psychological toll is crucial for affected individuals and their support networks. Dr Ramesh said, “Seeking professional help like therapy can provide a safe space to process their feelings and help them understand what and how they are feeling.” Even being a part of support groups and different communities where women can connect with other women facing similar challenges could be empowering.

Being Practical/Realistic

Dr Ramesh advised, “Though it is natural to be hopeful for positive outcomes, it's important to balance hope with realism. It is understanding that the path to conception might be longer and challenging and being kind to oneself. Be kind and forgiving to yourself, especially during moments of doubt or frustration.”
