Do you also struggle with chest pain? Well, sudden chest pain can be extremely discomforting and may even last for a longer period sometimes. There are many factors that may trigger chest pain. It is one of the most common problems that makes a person rush to the hospital emergency. Chest pain develops below the neck and in the area above the diaphragm. These pains can be treated at home or a worse stage pain may require visiting the doctor too. However, one first needs to understand that Chest pain does not not necessarily imply pain in that area. It also includes signs like heaviness, tightness,  burning sensation or pin-pricking. As per Dr. Tilak said, "Chest pain could mean a serious heart related problem like a heart attack or could be a manifestation of any of the several causes of chest pain." You can differentiate between the chest pain on the basis of type of pain, location of pain, duration of pain and the effective treatment for that particular pain. These can easily tell if the chest pain is serious or not. He further added, "Chest pain which is at the centre of the chest, squeezing or heaviness in type, radiating to shoulders, arms, jaw or back, associated perspiration, chest pain which is brought on by exertion and is relieved by rest. All these point to the chest pain being serious in nature and to be concerned about and not ignored."

Chest pain causes

There can be many factors behind chest pain. Blockages in the arteries of the heart may result in decreased amount of blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscld. This can be one of the major causes if having chest pain. in. There could be other reasons for having chest pain like  musculoskeletal triggers that can begin from the skin, muscle, bone or joints. Moreover, chest pain can also be commonly caused by acid reflux in the stomach. It can lead to pain and heartburning. Another cause of chest pain is the pleural covering of the lungs and the pain may travel to the chest.

Tips to treat chest pain


The treatment of chest pain also depends upon the underlying cause. Only a doctor can help in figuring out the main cause of chest pain by identifying the type of pain. You should go in emergency if the pain is too severe or is lasting for more than a few minutes. According to Dr. Tilak, here are three tips for chest pain relief:

  • If the cause is musculoskeletal, then taking a simple painkiller pill or applying a pain-relieving gel locally should be helpful. 
  • If acid-reflux is the cause, then antacids should help. 
  • If it is cardiac or anginal pain, then keeping a nitrate-like medicine under the tongue would relieve the chest pain.
