Winter Skin Care Tips: Expert Shares Why It Is Important To Tweak Your Skincare Routine In Winter And How

As the seasons change, so should our skincare routines. Winter, with its cold temperatures and dry air, brings about unique challenges for our skin.

According to research featured in the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology, skin conditions such as acne, eczema, warts, chronic lesions, atopic dermatitis, flaky skin, and pigmentation experience a notable increase during the winter season. Additionally, the colder months contribute to a heightened prevalence of infections, encompassing viral, bacterial, and fungal skin diseases.

To learn about some practical tips to tweak your skincare routine during the winter months effectively, the team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to  Dr Hariprasad VR, Research Scientist, Discovery Sciences Group, Himalaya Wellness Company.

Expert Shares Why It Is Important To Tweak Your Skincare Routine In Winter And How

Hydration Is Key

Winter air tends to be dry, which can leave our skin feeling tight and dehydrated. It's essential to boost hydration during this season. “It is advisable to switch to heavier creams and lotions during winters for enhanced protection,” he added.

Look for products with ingredients like coconut oil, olive oil, cocoa butter, and glycerin to lock in moisture and keep your skin supple.

Protect Against Harsh Elements

“As you carry on with your daily life in winter, it is important to ensure minimum skin is exposed to harsh winter weather,” recommended Dr Hariprasad. Cold winds and low temperatures can strip away the skin's natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.

One effective strategy to achieve this can be to use a protective barrier, such as a rich moisturiser or a facial oil, to shield your skin from the harsh winter elements. Don't forget to apply sunscreen, as UV rays can still be damaging even in colder months.

Exfoliate Gently

Winter can exacerbate dry and flaky skin. While exfoliation is essential, it's crucial to do so gently to avoid further irritation. Opt for a mild exfoliant to slough off dead skin cells and promote a more radiant complexion.

Dr Hariprasad suggested, “As per the American Academy of Dermatology, products containing alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids are usually not recommended during winters as they can be irritating to dry and sensitive skin.”

Don't Forget About Lips and Hands

The delicate skin on your lips and hands is often more prone to dryness during winter. Dr Hariprasad said, “Protecting the skin and lips with suitable winter skincare essentials is a must. Moisturise your face and lips with an effective cream or lotion, mainly after washing.”

Use a nourishing lip balm and hand cream regularly to prevent chapping and keep these areas moisturised.

Adjust Your Cleansing Routine

Harsh cleansers can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to increased dryness. “Apply only gentle skincare products that are not made with harsh ingredients,” said Dr Hariprasad.

Additionally, he suggested limiting hot showers, as hot water can contribute to dehydration. “Using lukewarm water during baths and showers is essential during winter,” he added.

Stay Hydrated from the Inside Out

Dr Hariprasad stressed the importance of staying well-hydrated during winter. Hydrating your skin involves more than just topical products. Ensure you drink enough water throughout the day to keep your body and skin hydrated. Herbal teas and foods with high water content can also contribute to your overall hydration.
