How to be Heart Healthy after 40
40 could be depressing; an entire life went by so fast that you would be dumbstruck to even believe that you are 40. You could make it better by keeping your heart healthy and being fir and fine.
People at 40 still have their demanding jobs, and growing children, ailing parents and so many other troubles that it could be stressful on them. But it is also a very vital time for one to take care of oneself when it comes to health related issues, especially the heart. Here are some ways in which you can ensure to remain healthy after 40.
You may think that at 40 you deserve all the luxury that is there in the world, but it is not quite so. You certainly can experience luxury if you have earned it, but do dedicate at least an hour a day to exercises. You could also do the little things that count, like taking the steps at least one time in a day, and taking a walk around your locality or at the park. Your best bet at this busy age would be to play some sport for an hour every day, this way you will feel better and become healthier.
You also have to be careful about the kind of foods that you are eating. They should be able to support your heart and keep it healthy instead of deteriorating it. Eat fish, especially the fatty ones like mackerel, salmon and sardines. These are high in omega three fatty acids and could aid in reducing the risk of heart diseases.
It has been seen that people who eat whole grains happen to be leaner and also have a lower risk of heart disease in comparison to those who don’t. Whole grains contain antioxidants, phytoestrogens and phytosterols that are protective against coronary disease. Also the fiber that is present in the whole grains has its benefit have been found to be good for lowering risk of heart disease as it is with high fiber foods. In fact in a study at the Harvard University it was found that people who ate a high-fiber diet had a 40 percent lower risk of heart disease than those who ate a low-fiber diet.
Smoking tobacco is one of the greatest risk factors for a heart disease; it could also cause lung cancer and emphysema. This is primarily because the chemicals that are found in the tobacco can actually damage the heart and build plaque in the walls of the arteries that could then lead to the narrowing of blood vessels. There are over 4,800 chemicals found in tobacco and 69 of them could cause cancer. Cigarette smoking also leads to an increase in the blood pressure and forces the heart to exert more pressure thus making it work harder. Tobacco is therefore a strict no-no, even if you choose to chew it. At 40 your lungs should be able to get clean air and your heart should not be disturbed by unwanted chemicals.
One of the most important things to do when you are 40 years of age is to go for regular checkups, as to see that you are not suffering from any heart disease. If something does go wrong then you have time to get cured, or else things may take a wrong turn. Get your blood pressures checked at least every two years and your cholesterol checked at least once every five years. Make sure that you know what is going on in your body so that you can fight it off with ease. At this age, regular checkups definitely become a necessity.
40 is a great age to be, all your hard work and struggle begins to pay off at this time. So, make sure that you are fit and fine to relish this time of your life.
