Expert Shares How Dense Fog May Worsen Rheumatic Disorders Like Arthritis And Gout

Days of zero visibility are fast approaching North India, as numerous states got a taste of it earlier this week when dense fog dropped the visibility to 50m. While dense fog may have a charm of its own, it also brings along a host of health complications.

One such complication is the effects of fog on rheumatic disorders. Talking to the team of OnlyMyHealth Dr Sunil Dachepalli, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic, Robotic Joint Replacement & Arthroscopic Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad shared, “There is mixed scientific evidence to support the idea that fog or changes in weather conditions directly increase the chances of developing rheumatism.”

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, rheumatism or rheumatic disorders is an umbrella term that includes conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, gout, and lupus. Rheumatic diseases cause severe joint pain as it breaks the cartilage or the soft tissue that protects joints.

“Some people with arthritis or similar conditions may report increased discomfort or pain during certain weather conditions, including foggy weather,” said Dr Dachepali.

He shared that some studies suggest a potential connection between changes in weather, such as fluctuations in temperature and barometric pressure in the environment and increased joint pain in some individuals. However, the relationship is complex and not everyone with arthritis or rheumatic conditions experiences worsened symptoms during specific weather conditions.

One such study was conducted by Harvard Medical School, which found a link between high humidity during cold weather and worse pain and stiffness in people with arthritis.

Adverse Effects Of Dense Fog

Listing some adverse effects of dense fog on people living with rheumatic disorder, Dr Dachepali listed:

  • Increased Joint Pain: Some individuals with rheumatic disorders report increased joint pain and stiffness during periods of foggy or damp weather. However, this is subjective and varies from person to person.
  • Barometric Pressure Changes: Changes in atmospheric pressure which can occur during foggy weather are often cited as a potential factor influencing joint pain. However, the evidence is mixed and not everyone with rheumatic conditions experiences this effect.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: Some people with rheumatic disorders may be sensitive to temperature changes, and foggy conditions can be associated with cooler temperatures. Cold weather may contribute to increased stiffness and discomfort for some individuals.

As a parting advice, Dr Dachepali shared that it is crucial to recognise that responses to weather conditions are highly individualised. What may affect one person negatively might not have the same impact on another. “If you have a specific rheumatic disorder and notice a correlation between certain weather conditions, including heavy fog, and an increase in symptoms, it's essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalised advice, adjust your treatment plan if necessary, and help you manage your symptoms more effectively,” he concluded.
