Pregnancy is a time filled with excitement, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to ensuring a healthy and full-term delivery. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 1.5 Crore infants are born before the 37th week of pregnancy each year, and the number is increasing. Babies born prematurely have greater health issues at birth and later in life than those born full term.
While many expectant mothers focus on diet and exercise, a lesser-known factor may play a significant role in preventing premature birth—chewing gum. Recent research suggests that something as simple as chewing gum could potentially reduce the risk of preterm labour and complications during pregnancy.
To shed light on the same, we connected with an expert, Dr. Archana Dhawan Bajaj, Gynaecologist, Obstetrician, and IVF Expert, Nurture IVF Clinic, New Delhi.

The Link Between Oral Health And Premature Birth
Dr. Bajaj says, “Oral health and the rest of your body’s health are inextricably linked. Pregnant women are at a higher risk of oral health problems due to hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. Gum disease is common during this time, and many women who had previously maintained good dental health may experience symptoms such as swelling and bleeding gums during those nine months.”
She goes on to highlight that gum disease is not just an oral health concern but has systemic implications. Research has linked poor gum health to an increased risk of preterm birth. Inflammation caused by gum disease can spread beyond the mouth, potentially affecting the pregnancy.
Role Of Xylitol Chewing Gum
“A 10-year study involving over 10,000 women found that chewing sugar-free gum containing xylitol during pregnancy may reduce the risk of preterm births. While xylitol is the chemical responsible for decreasing this risk, the study only examined its usage in chewing gum and not in other forms (such as lozenges, rinses, beverages, and so on). “Xylitol may modify the oral microbiota, resulting in healthier gums, less systemic inflammation, and hence fewer premature deliveries,” says Dr. Bajaj.
Don’t Ignore Your Dental Health
Dr. Bajaj further adds that dental health is likely a significant aspect of overall health during pregnancy. Dentists and healthcare providers are increasingly encouraging pregnant women to prioritise oral hygiene. Regular dental checkups, brushing, flossing, and even chewing xylitol gum are being suggested as effective ways to maintain gum health during pregnancy.
“Dental health is becoming recognised as a vital part of pregnancy care. Pregnant women are advised to stay on top of their oral hygiene routines and consult with their dentists regularly. By doing so, they can reduce the likelihood of gum disease and its associated risks, potentially improving outcomes for both mother and baby,” says Dr. Bajaj.
She remarks that this surprising connection highlights the importance of looking at health holistically during pregnancy. Simple actions like chewing sugar-free gum could make a big difference in supporting a healthy pregnancy.

How To Take Care Of Your Oral Health When You’re Pregnant?
Dr. Bajaj strongly emphasises that if your previous dental visit was more than 6 months ago or you have any oral health problems or concerns, make an appointment as soon as possible. She then lists down the following measures you can take as a mother-to-be.
- Brush your teeth twice every day. Brush your teeth with a gentle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste every morning and night.
- Do not rinse after brushing. The tiny quantity of toothpaste that remains in your mouth is healthy for your teeth.
- Floss once every day. Flossing cleans between teeth, where a toothbrush cannot reach.
- Protect your teeth from gastric acid. If you vomit or get heartburn, rinse your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water.
- Eat nutritious foods. Consume more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, nonfat or low-fat milk, cheese, cottage cheese, and unsweetened yogurt. Lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, beans, and nuts are all acceptable options.
- Make sure you drink enough water, especially between meals and snacks.
- Drink fluoridated tap water.
- Eat fewer sweets and sugary beverages– Avoid candies, cookies, cake, dried fruits, fruit-flavoured beverages, and pop.
Prioritise Your Oral Health For A Healthy Pregnancy
The connection between oral health and pregnancy outcomes is overlooked. As Dr. Bajaj highlights, taking steps to maintain good dental hygiene, such as regular checkups, brushing, flossing, and even chewing xylitol gum, can significantly reduce the risk of gum disease and its potential complications, including preterm birth.
It is high time we viewed pregnancy health holistically; expectant mothers can take measures that positively impact both their well-being and that of their baby. Simple yet effective actions like maintaining oral health may play a crucial role in ensuring a healthier pregnancy and a safer delivery.
