Himachal Pradesh, one of the picturesque states in northern India, is facing a concerning health issue as recent statistics reveal higher rates of diabetes and obesity than the national average. The state, known for its breathtaking landscapes and popular tourist destinations, is now grappling with the growing health challenges of its residents.

According to a comprehensive health survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and India Diabetes, the prevalence of diabetes and obesity in Himachal Pradesh has surpassed the national average. The survey, published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, indicates a significant rise in the number of individuals affected by these conditions, warranting immediate attention from healthcare authorities and policymakers.

The findings of the survey highlight the need for comprehensive health initiatives targeting diabetes prevention and obesity management. It has become evident that the changing lifestyle patterns, including sedentary behaviour and unhealthy eating habits, have contributed to the rising health concerns in the state.

Talking on the subject, Dr Jitender Mokta, the principal investigator of the study in HP said, "The prevalence rate of diabetes and pre-diabetes in the state is 13.5 and 18.7% against the national average of 11.4 and 15.3%, respectively."

The state government, in collaboration with healthcare organisations and NGOs, has initiated discussions to formulate a comprehensive action plan to tackle the growing burden of diabetes and obesity. Efforts are underway to develop sustainable programs aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles, encouraging physical activity, and improving access to nutritious food.
