India has just witnessed a heatwave that has already claimed several lives, says the Union Health Ministry. The country reportedly registered 24,849 cases of suspected heat stroke in the month of March to May. As many as 56 deaths were confirmed caused by this suspected case of heat stroke, with the month of May recording 46 fatalities. However, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi are yet to confirm their data. This means the actual numbers could still be higher.

Impact across Regions

India's heatwave has swept across its huge landmass, with reports of death tolls due to the extreme heat being reported in Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Madhya Pradesh has recorded 14 confirmed death cases, followed by Maharashtra with 11 death cases. Apparently, the months of April and May, which saw the recent Lok Sabha elections conducted, have also recorded a rise in the number of casualties among those deployed in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with at least 25 cases.

Symptoms of Heatstroke

  • High body temperature: A core body temperature of more than 104 F (40 C) is a primary sign of heatstroke.
  • Altered mental state: The affected individual may experience confusion, agitation, slurred speech, or become incoherent and comatose.
  • Alteration in sweating: The skin will feel hot and dry, but may become moist.
  • Nausea and vomiting: Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting may present.
  • Flushed skin: The body's skin will be red due to increased body temperature.
  • Rapid breathing and heart rate: An increased respiratory rate or pulse rate is noted.
  • Headache: A pounding headache is common in heatstroke cases.

Causes Of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is caused due to heat exposure or physical exertion. Additionally, the following factors contribute to the increased vulnerability to heatstroke: Dressing inappropriately, drinking alcohol, and dehydration.

Preventive Measures to Avoid Heatstroke

  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids helps in replacing those lost from the body with water and electrolytes.
  • Dress appropriately: In loose, lightweight clothing, heat can dissipate easily.
  • Avoid the sun: Protect yourself from sunburn by using sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Be careful: Try not to overexert yourself in peak heat hours, and stay in the shade wherever possible.
  • Never leave anyone in a parked car: Even if the windows are open, the vehicle is subject to rapid heating and can cause serious risks.
