Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has been admitted to Delhi’s Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital following a severe health crisis. The 77-year-old veteran politician is reportedly in critical condition after a urinary tract infection (UTI) escalated into full-blown kidney failure, according to hospital sources.
Hospitalisation and Health Emergency
Satya Pal Malik was admitted on May 11 after he complained of excruciating abdominal pain and trouble urinating. What was initially suspected to be a routine urinary tract infection rapidly worsened. A close aide confirmed that both of Malik’s kidneys have ceased functioning, and doctors are now battling to stabilise his condition.
A senior physician at RML Hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed, “He came in with signs of UTI, but unfortunately, the infection spread aggressively and compromised kidney function. We are administering critical care, but the prognosis is grim.”
Doctors are monitoring Malik round-the-clock, and his condition remains precarious. He is being supported by a multidisciplinary medical team as efforts continue to prevent further complications.

Political Turmoil Amid Health Scare
The health crisis comes at a politically sensitive moment for the former Governor. Just days before his hospitalisation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet against him in connection with an alleged corruption scandal tied to the Kiru Hydroelectric Power Project. The project, worth approximately ₹2,200 crore, is under scrutiny for alleged irregularities in contract awarding procedures during Malik’s tenure.
However, those close to Malik have vehemently denied the allegations. A confidant stated, “This is clearly an act of vendetta politics. Satya Pal Malik was among the first to raise questions about these contracts. He has no role in the mismanagement or any wrongdoing.”
The aide added that Malik had been the original whistleblower in the matter, implying that the current chargesheet is politically motivated and intended to suppress dissent.

A Legacy of Outspokenness
Satya Pal Malik, who has previously held the gubernatorial posts of Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Meghalaya, and Bihar, is well known for his candid and often controversial views on governance, corruption, and civil rights. During his tenure as J&K Governor, he oversaw critical decisions leading up to the abrogation of Article 370 and was often in the spotlight for his remarks on sensitive national issues.
Despite being a member of the political establishment, Malik has not hesitated to speak out against alleged wrongdoing within government institutions. This history of transparency has garnered him both praise and criticism.
Concern and Support Across the Spectrum
As news of Malik’s deteriorating health spread, leaders across party lines and civil society figures expressed concern. Messages of support have poured in for the former Governor, with many urging a fair and transparent probe into both his medical condition and legal situation.
One senior opposition leader commented, “We may differ politically, but no one can deny Satya Pal Malik’s dedication to public service. We hope he receives the best care and recovers soon.”
Bottomline
While the nation watches closely, Malik’s immediate priority remains his health. Doctors continue to monitor him closely, and family members have asked for privacy during this critical time.
Whether Malik’s legal troubles will intensify remains to be seen, but for now, all attention is focused on his recovery. With both his health and reputation hanging in the balance, the coming days are expected to be pivotal for the former Governor.
